PaFIA Philadelphia Membership Event with Niels Arden Oplev
May 6, 2012
Location: Drexel University, Bossone Research Center-Mitchell Auditorium, 3140 Market St., Philadelphia
PaFIA hosted an event in conjunction with Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies. The fascinating guest speaker was Niels Arden Oplev, Film Director and Screenwriter.
Oplev directed the original Scandinavian version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2009), based on the book from Swedish writer Stieg Larsson starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace. This film is the best-selling Scandinavian film ever.
For almost 2 hours, Mr. Oplev discussed his life as a filmmaker, writer and artist. He described his creative process and his films, and showed clips from his previous award winning works including “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, “We Shall Overcome”, and “Worlds Apart”.
Mr. Oplev also discussed his current project “Dead Man Down” starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace which is shooting in Philadelphia this Spring! He shared his fondness for filming in Philadelphia, noting the warm welcome he has received from the city. The PA Film Tax Credit incentive was very important for shooting this project in Philadelphia.
Karen Curry, Executive Director of Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies commented, “What a terrific event. We were thrilled to have been able to host the event and Niels Arden Oplev was absolutely spellbinding. What a wonderful experience for our students to be part of. It was a pleasure to work with all of you and we look forward to being able to do more events in the future.”
Thank you to Drexel University for hosting this special event. We also thank the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce for joining us as an event partner.
